Lyrical Rhymes

Guide

 

Lyrical Rhymes are rhymes for a hip-hop or rap song.  They are lyrical in the sense that they are poetic and meaningful.  They must rhyme according to a particular meter. 

 

Rationale:  Research demonstrates that synthesizing information, or taking information and creating new and independent work, increases understanding and retention.  Many students of today spend time writing rhymes but most rhymes are on hackneyed, unoriginal topics.  Using the rhyme on academic subjects will challenge them to write about original material.

 

Instructions:  Identify information to include.  Flow.  Write.  Record if possible.

·         Rhymes should follow a particular meter.

·         Use relevant terms and information.

Lyrical Rhyme Example

 

Immigrant:  We heard this land was paved with gold.  The land of prosperity or so I was told.   When we got here we found it wasn’t paved at all.  Now were in a tenement living it raw.  Work all day every day don’t know my kids at all. They say the only way is the capitalist way, but they practice nepotism down at Tammany Hall.  Political Machines are our only hope, it’s as corrupt as home; poverty is everywhere we go.  Screw the land of democracy, this is the land of hypocrisy. 

 

Nah nah nah, you don’t what you talking about.  Maybe you need to hear it straight from the horses mouth.

Yo What Up this is Rockefeller, John D.  I’m taking kerosene from sea to shining sea.  I’m bringing a Standard to an industry.  So what if I’m approaching monopoly?  I’ve seen my friends go broke, I’ve seen the market crash.  I used to be poor folk till I made my cash.  But I’m blowin up big now, just hand your Co. over now, cause like your friends have found, I’m going to push you out, I’m going to get you out, so just sell out now, or as the world is round, I’m going to buy you out, cheeeah…. 

 

Huh, What?  Huh, this is C to the A-R-N-E-G-I-E.  I’m making cheap steel to lay from sea to shining sea.  I make possible Manifest Destiny.  Blowin up Bessemer to an industry.  Some people say I only care about my self.  Guess they haven’t read my book Gospel of Wealth.  Like my man Rockefeller I’m promoting public health, public libraries and the arts as well.  If you can’t imagine just how I roll, well you might take a stroll over to Carnegie Hall yall.  Fo sure.
