Sentence Variations

Guide

 

Sentence Variations allows students to practice creating sentences by using different grammatically correct structures.

 

Rationale:  Many students need to practice grammar.  Choosing sentences that cover assigned information will allow rehearsal.  Rehearsal is essential to retention.

 

Instructions:  On a blank sheet of paper, write a grammatically correct sentence that discusses a main idea.  Review appropriate sentence structures and create five variations of that sentence.  Repeat the exercise ten times. 

 

General Guidelines

 

·         Use main ideas and major information for sentences

·         Use a guide to grammar to select variations

·         Practice as many variations as possible.

Sentence Variations Example

 

  1. From 1980 to 1988, Ronald Reagan, Republican, was the President of the United States. 
  2. Republican Ronald Reagan was President of the United States from 1980 to 1988. 
  3. The Republican candidate in 1980, Ronald Reagan, was elected and served two terms ending in 1988.
  4. Ronald Reagan was a Republican President from 1980 to 1988. 
  5. The President of the United States during the period of 1980 to 1988 was Republican Ronald Reagan.
