To support our Allies (Britain and France), make the world safe for democracy, safely supply the allies with American equipment.  France had surrendered and Britain was under extreme attack from the air.

The experience of WWI made America isolationist and there was no public support for the war.  There was also no direct threat to the United States.

Many people believe that Pearl Harbor was forewarned but a decision was made to let the Japanese attack.  Pearl Harbor was used as a justification for entry into the Pacific war, but since the Japanese were allied with the Germans we also went to war with Germany.
